Embarking on Your Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Journey: What to Expect?

June 4th, 2025

Imagine waking up one morning, ready to start your day, only to be greeted by an unexpected, sharp pain in your pelvic area. As you try to go about your routine, you realize this discomfort is more than just a passing ache. It’s affecting your ability to move, sit comfortably, or even use the bathroom without wincing. This scenario might sound familiar to many individuals, and it’s often a wake-up call that something isn’t quite right with their pelvic floor health.

The first step towards addressing pelvic floor issues can feel daunting, but Legacies Health Centre is here. Our compassionate team of pelvic floor physiotherapists is here to guide you through every stage of your journey, starting with your initial assessment. This blog will guide you through what to expect at your first pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment, allowing you to feel prepared and confident while focusing on your well-being and taking charge of your pelvic health.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Before You Arrive

To make the most of your first visit, consider the following preparations:

  • Jot down any questions or concerns you have about your pelvic health.
  • Make a list of the current medicines and supplements you’re taking.
  • Gather relevant medical records, including imaging results if available.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

What to Bring?

Make sure to bring:

  • Your health card and insurance details are required.
  • A detailed list of your symptoms and when they occur.
  • A small notebook to jot down information during the session.

The Initial Consultation

Getting to Know You

Your pelvic floor physiotherapist will begin by creating a welcoming environment where you can feel at ease discussing your concerns. They’ll ask about your medical history, lifestyle, and specific symptoms. This conversation is crucial for tailoring a treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.

Physical Assessment

After the initial discussion, your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough physical assessment. This may include:

  • Observing your posture and movement patterns.
  • Assessing your abdominal and back muscles.
  • Evaluating your breathing mechanics.

With your consent, the physiotherapist may also perform an internal examination to assess your pelvic floor muscles’ strength, tone, and function. Rest assured, this process is conducted with the utmost professionalism and respect for your comfort.

Treatment Planning

Customized Approach

Based on the findings from your assessment, your pelvic floor physiotherapist will develop a personalized treatment plan. This may incorporate:

  • Exercises that focus on strengthening or relaxing the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Biofeedback techniques to improve muscle awareness.
  • Manual therapy to address tissue restrictions.
  • Education on how to maintain proper posture and body mechanics.

Your physiotherapist will explain each aspect of the treatment plan, ensuring you understand the rationale behind each recommendation.

Ongoing Support

Your journey doesn’t end after the first appointment. Follow-up visits are essential for monitoring progress and adjusting your treatment plan. Your physiotherapist will schedule these sessions based on your individual needs and goals. At Legacies Health Centre, we believe in empowering our patients with knowledge and support.
