Acupuncture

A safe and non-invasive technique that accelerates the healing process, decreases inflammation and provides pain relief.

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that uses needles to stimulate the balance and flow of Qi energy through the body. According to TCM, Qi energy flows along pathways (known as meridians) connected throughout the whole body. When the energy of flow is smooth, the body is in good health; when the flow of energy is deficient or obstructed, it indicates a susceptibility for illness and/or certain conditions.

Acupuncture is a safe and effective alternative treatment. Practitioners at Legacies combine this technique with Western medicine, evidence-informed practice, to provide this as an alternative or adjunct treatment.

The registered acupuncture treatment involves using extremely thin, medical grade, sterile and disposable acupuncture needles. There is actually sometimes no perception of the needle, and most people describe a small, light pinch where the needle is inserted. Your Acupuncturist may also use a technique called “cupping” for specific circulatory reasons, and will give homecare advice ranging from exercise to lifestyle changes and recommendations.

Is Acupuncture recommended for me?

Individuals from all ages (children to seniors) can be treated with acupuncture. A recommended course of treatment can be made after a complete assessment by one of our trained practitioners who are trained in acupuncture. If you are not sure if this treatment is for you, Legacies offers complimentary 15-minute consultation, where a therapist will be able to assess if this treatment is recommended for your individual needs.

The registered Acupuncturist at Legacies Health Centre predominantly sees patients where pain persists (becomes chronic) for various reasons. This can also be a very effective form of treatment when other forms of therapy have failed.

Before Your Appointment

If there are any specific preparations required for your appointment, you will be advised prior to your appointment day.

First & Subsequent Appointments

We recommend not eating too much, nor having an empty stomach for your appointment. Please wear loose fitting and comfortable clothes that can easily be rolled up, or expose the area of treatment.

The initial visit will take approximately 60-minutes. Your acupuncture therapist will collect your medical history, perform a physical assessment, and advise you of the diagnosis and recommended treatment. Your therapist may also refer you to other practitioners at our clinic that are aligned to your individual treatment plan.

At each subsequent visit, please provide your therapist with as much details and feedback as possible. This will enable the acupuncturist to re-examine the treatment plan and make necessary adjustments. Different techniques may be used to enhance outcomes.

At the end of the session, you will be reminded to book your follow-up appointments, when needed. You may do that with your clinician, call one of our locations, or book online.

After Your Appointment

You will be able to move the body part normally, and you may notice relief of symptoms after the session. If you experienced small amounts of bleeding during the needle insertion, you may also notice mild bruising at the area where the needle was inserted. Heating pad can be applied locally for 20 minutes after treatment.
