What Are Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are medical devices designed to be worn with your shoes to provide you with enhanced support and alignment. They are manufactured considering the unique structure of your foot so that they can provide you with a comfortable and functional fit. These orthotic insoles can significantly improve the function of your feet and lower limbs, providing pain relief and improving stability. This can significantly help patients who normally struggle with foot discomfort during their daily activities.

Do You Need Custom Orthotic Inserts?

Designed to promote pain relief and enhance stability, custom orthotics can help those who are suffering from a wide range of conditions in the foot and lower limbs. Whether you are an athlete dealing with chronic pain or simply need a solution for improved comfort and support, custom orthotics or insoles may be the treatment you have been looking for. For example, custom foot orthotics are a great option for runners, addressing a range of conditions from high arches to overpronation and flat feet.

If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, you may benefit from having customized orthotics:

  • Foot pain (in localized area)
  • Heel and/or arch pain
  • Hip, back, knee and/or leg pain
  • Bunions
  • Hammer toes
  • Heel spurs

Any of the below diagnosis/conditions are often benefited by the use of custom orthotics:

  • Gait abnormalities
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Runner’s knee
  • Sacroiliac syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome
  • Diabetes
  • Hip bursitis
  • Lower extremity arthritis

The Benefits of Custom Orthotics

Custom Orthotics can bring numerous benefits to those who are suffering from mechanical dysfunctions in their foot. Some of them include:

Relieve Foot Pain

Designed to address the root causes of discomfort, custom orthotics can help relieve foot pain caused by conditions like plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and arthritis. This happens because they can better distribute the pressure on your feet, which reduces inflammation and muscle fatigue.

Enhance Performance:

Custom orthotics can also help you improve balance, stability, and posture, which makes walking, running, or standing easier. This can greatly enhance the performance of athletes, who need to be active while also avoiding excessive strain during physical activities.

Prevent Injuries

Orthotics can also support proper alignment, which prevents the pain associated with bad posture. This can significantly reduce the chances of suffering from injuries in the knee, back or foot.

Long-Lasting Comfort:

Made with high-quality, durable materials, custom orthotics can greatly enhance support and comfort for your feet for many years. This ensures that you can count on your orthotics without worrying about frequent replacements in the future.

What to Expect

Before your appointment: If there are any specific preparations required for your appointment, you will be advised prior to your appointment day.

Your Assessment

Please bring to the appointment your commonly worn footwear (dress/ casual/ athletic shoes, work boots, etc.), along with any existing orthotics or foot aids you may be currently using.

The Doctor of Chiropractic will use a total foot care approach when recommending strategies that may include solutions to lifestyle, mobility and overall health conditions. Sharing of expertise will assist in making an informed choice about the health of your feet.

A biomechanical assessment is performed to determine the specific need for orthotics. This may include evaluations of stance/gait, joint/muscle palpation, orthopedic examinations, as well as looking at wear patterns in your current shoes and orthotics.

If orthotics are recommended, the doctor will use a painless semi-weight bearing foam cast to create impressions of your feet. The molds from your feet, as well as your biomechanical assessment, will be used to create your custom orthotics in a highly specialized lab.

Your Orthotics Fitting Appointment

You will be required to return for a fitting and any final adjustments that may be required to the orthotics, which are performed at Legacies. This whole process can take approximately 3-4 weeks, depending on shipping. Book your orthotic assessment well in advance of your benefits’ end date to avoid disappointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to book an Orthotics Assessment?

No, you do not need a referral for Orthotics services.

Will My Muscles Get Weaker Wearing Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics will not reduce muscles tone or make your muscles weaker. They will help position your foot correctly, so your muscles are used more efficiently.

I am not sure if Orthotics is right for me. How will I know?

If you are unsure if this service is for you, our Doctors of Chiropractic offer Free 10-minute consultations, and they will be able to assess and determine if orthotics are recommended for you. Learn more about our Chiropractic Care services.

Do I need a prescription for foot orthotics?

Prescriptions are not required for you to have access to foot orthotics, but they may be beneficial for insurance purposes as, in many cases, coverage depends on medical referral.

Do custom orthotics fit any shoe?

Custom orthotics are designed to fit a wide range of shoe designs, but fit and comfort may vary depending on style. Orthotic-friendly shoes include those with removable insoles and a wide foot support.

Is this service covered by my extended Health Plan?

You may need to check your coverage and allowance for orthotics with your Extended Health Provider.

If you have coverage, the initial appointment (Orthotic Initial Assessment) and subsequent appointment (Orthotics Fitting) are often covered (fully or partially) under Extended Health plans. Legacies may be able to do direct billing to most Extended Health Providers (see list).

The orthotics themselves can also be covered by your Extended Health plan, but they cannot be directly billed to your Insurance Plan. They cost $425 ($225 paid on the first visit and $200 paid when they are available to pick-up). Legacies provides patients with all documentation to be submitted for reimbursement. Please check with your specific insurance provider to determine your eligibility and allowance for orthotics.

Should I wear my custom orthotics all the time?

The more you wear your custom orthotics, the more it will help you reduce pain and discomfort during your daily activities. However, treatment and recommendations may vary, depending on the patient’s condition and needs.

Are custom orthotics worth it?

The benefits of investing in custom orthotics can quickly add-up in foot-pain relief and preventing further injuries. Getting custom orthotics or inserts prescribed will be able to address your specific condition. Insurance coverage and health plans may also be able to help cover the costs.
