Kinesiology & Active Rehab

Regain strength, flexibility, and function with Kinesiology & Active Rehabilitation.

About Kinesiology

Kinesiology is the study of physical activity and its impact on health, society, and quality of life. A Kinesiologist is a graduate of a university Bachelor’s program in Human Kinetics.

Kinesiologists employ the use of corrective exercises and stretches to help fix muscle imbalances, which are often the cause of ongoing pain after an accident and/or injury. By strengthening muscles that have become weakened from damage or disuse, and stretching overly tight muscles, the uneven forces across the various joints of the body can become balanced, leading to proper muscle function and body movement.

The main goal of Kinesiology sessions is to help clients to return to their regular life activities, through active rehabilitation (strengthening, mobility and stretching exercises).

Kinesiology sessions include:

  • assessment to identify areas of weakness and restriction
  • customized exercise prescription
  • education regarding pain-management techniques, pacing, and injury prevention

Sessions will last about an hour and will usually include a warmup session, flexibility, strengthening, core stability, and functional movement integration exercises.

If you have an injury that has kept you from enjoying your everyday life activities, our professional Kinesiologists will develop a customized recovery plan to ensure you are back on track quickly.

Is Kinesiology recommended for me?

Before Your Appointment

If there are any specific preparations required for your appointment, you will be advised prior to your appointment day.

First and Subsequent Appointments

As your sessions will involve physical activity, running shoes and appropriate exercise attire are strongly recommended. Please bring a water bottle to your appointment.

Your first appointment will consist of a verbal assessment to obtain background information about your accident/injury, as well as areas affected and how your injuries affect your work/day-to-day life. There will also be a physical assessment portion to assess range of motion of the affected muscle groups, as well as simple strength testing, which is very important for us to determine muscle imbalances and/or joint dysfunctions/limitations.

After the assessment, your therapist will customize an exercise prescription and provide education regarding pain-management techniques, pacing, and injury prevention.

Subsequent visits will consist of resistance exercises, stretches, and movement techniques tailored to your individual injury. Visits typically start with a light warm-up, followed by a one-on-one exercise session with our knowledgeable Kinesiologists who will develop a personalized exercise routine targeting your affected areas.

Your Kinesiologist may refer you to other therapies available at our health centres that can support your treatment plan. As you recover from your injury, you might also be referred to Personal Training services, so you can work on the next stage of your health and fitness goals.

At the end of the session, you will be reminded to book your follow-up appointments, when needed. You may do that with your clinician, call one of our locations, or book online.

After Your Appointment

If applicable and needed for your condition/injury, and aligned to your treatment plan, you Kinesiologist will email exercises descriptions, pictures and videos.

Depending on the severity of your injury, difficulty/intensity of the exercises performed, or overall physical condition, you may experience muscle soreness in the exercised muscle groups over the next few days after your treatment. This is completely normal and part of the healing/repair process. If your muscles are very sore, refrain from exercising them and avoid overuse for 1-3 days until they recover. Light stretching is advised two days after treatment. Heat may also be applied if muscles feel tight, and ice packs may be applied if excessive swelling occurs. If you are experiencing excessive symptoms, contact your Kinesiologist.
