Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

A safe and respectful therapy to support individuals with pelvic health concerns.

About Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy consists of the assessment and treatment of a variety of conditions involving the pelvic floor muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tissues.

Our Physiotherapists at the Legacies Nordel and Burnaby locations are specialized in female pelvic health. Our Pelvic Health Physiotherapists will assess and prescribe exercises and therapies with the main focus to rehabilitate and strengthen the muscles lining of the pelvic floor.

The pelvic floor supports muscles and organs (bladder, rectum and reproductive system). When this support weakens (due to certain conditions and circumstances), individuals may experience pain, incontinence, organ prolapse, and other symptoms related to the pelvic area.

Is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy recommended for me?

The below symptoms and conditions may benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy rehabilitation:

Incontinence (stress, urge, overflow, functional)

Constipation or bowel strains

Lower back or hip pain

Pain or pressure in the pelvic region, genitals or rectum

Discomfort during sexual intercourse

Muscle spasms in the pelvic area

Post pelvic surgery

Prolapse of pelvic organs

Pregnancy and post-partum

Bed-wetting in children

Recurrent urinary tract infections

Aging

Menopause

If you are unsure if this treatment is recommended for you, call us and our staff will guide you through treatments available that can support your specific needs.

Before Your Appointment

If there are any specific preparations required for your appointment, you will be advised prior to your appointment day.

First and Subsequent Appointments

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy treatment requires client consent, which you may withdraw at any point. You may also bring a family member or friend to your appointment, or request for a witness during your appointment.

In your first appointment, your pelvic floor Physiotherapist will do a comprehensive assessment to collect your medical history and a physical exam (assess your posture, mobility, flexibility, strength of the muscles around the pelvic floor area). An internal exam may be required to assess prolapse, tender or tight areas. Your Physiotherapist will create a customized and individualized, evidence-based treatment plan, to address your unique symptoms, and rehabilitate your pelvic floor.

Treatment may include:

  • Exercises prescription (pelvic, hip, back)
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Manual therapy
  • Re-training of bowel and bladder functions
  • Breathing techniques
  • Education on awareness and required behavioural changes
  • Referrals to other professionals (with your consent) if additional therapy is required to provide you with the best treatment outcomes.

Your treatment will be re-assess in every visit. Please provide feedback about progress of symptoms and ask questions related to exercises you are performing at home.

We provide a safe, respectful and inclusive environment at all times during your treatment, so you can concentrate on getting better. Contact us is you have any questions, or to book your free consultation.

At the end of the session, you will be reminded to book your follow-up appointments, when needed. You may do that with your clinician, call one of our locations, or book online.

After Your Appointment

You may experience some mild muscle soreness after your appointment and home-prescribed exercises (due to the exercises you are performing during your treatment). This is expected, and it should not prevent you from moving or doing the activities of your daily life. If you are experiencing other symptoms, contact your Physiotherapist.
