What to Expect During a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Appointment
Pelvic floor physiotherapists understand and respect the private nature of this area of the body. Your comfort is their prime concern. Pelvic physio requires client consent, which you may withdraw at any point. You may also bring a family member or friend to your appointment, or request for a witness during your appointment.
The first stage of pelvic floor physiotherapy is consultation and assessment. This involves a detailed discussion about your specific pelvic concerns, medical history, and symptoms. It can be helpful to write down your main concerns and questions beforehand.
After the discussion, your physiotherapist will proceed with an external examination to assess your posture, flexibility, and strength around your lower back, hips, and pelvis. You will stand and lie down for this. It is best to wear loose-fitting clothing that allows for easy movement and easy access to your hips and lower abdomen.
You may require an internal pelvic exam to assess prolapse, tender or tight areas
After the assessment, your physiotherapist will develop an individualized treatment plan, which may include:
- Exercises
- Manual therapy
- Lifestyle modifications
- Education and management strategies
- Follow-up appointments and treatments
The length of a pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment is generally 30-45 minutes but can be longer depending on the complexity of the issue being treated and the treatments being used.
