What Happens When Chiropractors Crack Your Back?

July 12th, 2024

Are you in pain but afraid of going for a chiropractic adjustment? Would you rather seek out a less effective treatment for your pain because you don’t want a chiropractor to crack your back? Well, good news: a chiropractor does not crack your back or any bones at all. That cracking sound is caused by the chiropractic adjustment creating space between your joints. It’s a myth that the crack noise is from your bones.

Is Cracking Your Back Bad for You?

Many people have been told that cracking their joints, especially their knuckles, is bad for them, but researchers and over a century’s worth of chiropractors and patients have found the opposite. Indeed, after chiropractic manipulation, most patients have an improved range of motion, which creates greater mobility and less discomfort.

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

After assessing your condition, a chiropractor will use their hands to apply a quick, push to the desired joint. This push allows the pressure in the joint to release, allowing gas bubbles in and around the joint to escape. If a joint does not “pop” or release, the chiropractor will often massage the area around the joint and encourage you to relax before they repeat the adjustment. The result of this chiropractic treatment is an opening of the joint and a restoring movement within the body.

Chiropractic adjustments for your back performed by a licensed chiropractor an offer relief from pain and other ailments such as:

  • headaches
  • tingling
  • numbness
  • strain
  • stiffness
  • nerve pain
