How To Prepare For Your First Physiotherapy Treatment
Preparing for your first physiotherapy treatment ahead of time will help ensure you feel comfortable during the appointment and get the most out of your session. Here are some things to consider.
What information do you need?
Prior to booking your appointment, gather all relevant medical records, diagnostic reports and test results that may help the physical therapist understand your condition. This will ensure they can create an appropriate treatment plan.
What do you need to share about your condition?
Your physiotherapist will ask you questions about your symptoms, pain levels, medical history and if there are any activities that aggravate or relieve your condition. Be prepared to discuss your goals for treatment, how you currently manage your pain and any other key information to help them assess your situation.
How long are physio appointments?
Initial assessments are typically around 45 to 60 minutes, while follow-up treatment sessions are usually 30 to 45 minutes. The duration will be determined based on your condition, exercise program and overall treatment plan.
What to wear to physiotherapy?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, and dress in layers so you can make temperature adjustments as needed. Also, make sure the specific body part being treated is easily accessible. Finally, be sure to choose shoes that provide full foot and ankle support.
What do you need to bring?
If you have any assistive devices such as crutches, braces or orthotics, bring them along to your appointment. These items can help the physiotherapist assess your current usage and help you make any necessary adjustments.
What do you need to know about insurance coverage?
It’s helpful to understand how your insurance coverage works. Before your first physio appointment, check if you have extended health benefits that cover physiotherapy and determine if there are any limitations, such as a requirement for a doctor’s referral or a yearly cap on reimbursements.
If you’re seeking physiotherapy after a car accident, ICBC may provide coverage. Be sure to notify them of your collision, open a claim and be clear about your intention to pursue physical therapy treatments. WorkSafe BC may also provide coverage for physiotherapy if you were injured at work. Report your incident to your supervisor and inform WCB what kind of injury you had, and the treatment you are looking for.
Finally, note that every physiotherapy session is unique, and the required preparations may vary depending on your situation. It’s a good idea to contact the clinic and inquire about any specific instructions they may have for you.
