ICBC Services: Kinesiology and Active Rehabilitation After Your Car Accident
Kinesiology and active rehabilitation can accelerate your recovery from a car accident injury and allow you to return to everyday activities sooner. If you have an open claim, ICBC will automatically cover 12 kinesiology or active rehab sessions in the first three months after the accident. Here are some benefits of using kinesiology and active rehab after you’ve been injured in a car crash.
What are Kinesiology and Active Rehab?
Kinesiology is a scientific study of the human body’s mechanics and performance. According to the British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists, the study “applies the science of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and neuroscience to human movement and function.”
Kinesiology and active rehab practitioners help facilitate the recovery process through movements that restore functional range of motion and correct muscle imbalances. These interventions help you recover from injuries and regain physical function more effectively than with passive therapy alone.
How Can Kinesiology Help After a Car Accident?
After you’ve been injured, a kinesiologist can help you manage pain and improve symptoms by restoring movement, improving muscle strength and recovering neuromuscular control. Here are some of the benefits of kinesiology treatments.
- Increased strength and improved function. A Kinesiologist will use in-depth knowledge of human anatomy to prescribe exercises with specific purposes, targeting movements and muscle groups to reestablish strength, stability, and neuromuscular coordination.
- Restored range of motion. Car crash injuries can result in loss of mobility and movement. For example, whiplash can limit your neck movement, or a back injury could prevent you from bending over. It can keep you from work and enjoying everyday activities like walking. A Kinesiologist will focus on exercises that restore your mobility so that you can remain active even through your recovery period.
- Return to activities sooner. Your Kinesiologist will assess your needs at work and at home. They will design a custom program aimed at helping you to return to work and the activities you enjoy. They often prescribe a custom exercise plan you can continue to practice on your own at home in the months after your injury to avoid relapse or setbacks.
- Improving outcomes or eliminating the need for more invasive procedures. Car accident injuries may require surgical intervention… However, visiting a Kinesiologist prior to surgery can improve the surgical outcome and recovery process, and in some cases reduces the need for invasive medical procedures.
How Long Does It Take To Recover?
Recovery times vary according to the individual and depend on several factors, including:
- The severity of the injury
- The location of the injury
- The patient’s current health
- The patient’s treatment goals
Kinesiology sessions are 45-mins long, and the recommended frequency is between 1-3 sessions per week. Many people continue their sessions well after their recovery is complete, booking appointments every four to six weeks as part of their health routine.
When Should You Start Kinesiology?
You should start Kinesiology as soon as possible after you’ve been injured in a car accident. Even if your pain feels minor, having your injuries assessed by a professional may prevent them from becoming more serious. ICBC automatically pays a nominal amount for the first 12 sessions within three months of your injury. You will need a doctor’s recommendation if you need more treatments after that.
